CBD and Anxiety
CBD is skyrocketing in popularity, with 5% of 25-29 year olds using CBD, according to a recent survey. And it’s set to only get bigger, with the UK CBD industry expected to grow to be worth more than a whopping one billion pounds by 2025.
One of the biggest reasons for CBD’s meteoric rise in popularity? To treat anxiety.
Studies have shown CBD to reduce stress, lower the psychological symptoms of anxiety, and even treat other anxiety-related psychiatric disorders, too.
Ready to start feeling the benefits of CBD to relieve your own stress? Here’s what you need to know about how CBD can treat anxiety…
How does CBD treat Anxiety?
Treating anxiety is one of the most common uses for CBD – and with good reason.
Here’s the science part as to how it works to treat anxiety: the body is full of different receptors, which all receive signals from different stimuli. CBD interacts with receptors in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, as well as to alter serotonin signals. This is crucial when it comes to your mental health, as low serotonin levels are often linked with depression, and in many cases, low serotonin may also cause anxiety.
Traditionally, these low serotonin levels were treated with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) an antidepressant only available by prescription (such as Prozac or Zoloft). But now, people are discovering that natural CBD oil can manage anxiety instead of SSRI meds, with many studies proving the link between CBD and relieving anxiety.
The benefits of CBD Oil on Anxiety
In relation to generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), the American National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has said that CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety in a range of animals, such as rats, during lab tests. In this particular study, the subjects were seen to have much lower behavioral signs of anxiety as a result of CBD, while their physiological symptoms of anxiety – like an increased, racing heart rate, for example – also improved.
Even more relevantly, the same report also found that CBD reduces anxiety in human patients, in clinical trials. In these trials, CBD was shown to reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety, who were subjected to a stressful public speaking task.
Studies have also shown CBD’s effectiveness for other types of anxiety, too.
Take social anxiety disorder (SAD): In 20 study looked into CBD’s effects on people with SAD. In this case, people with SAD were given either an oral dose of 400 milligrams (mg) of CBD or a placebo. Those who received the CBD dose, did indeed have reduced anxiety levels overall, with the report confirming, “These results suggest that CBD reduces anxiety in SAD.”
There has also been lots of recent research into the effectiveness of CBD on treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), where CBD has been shown to help with the trauma-related anxiety symptoms of PSTD, such as nightmares and negative memories – all while also having fewer side effects than the current prescribed medicinal treatments.
More recent 2020 studies confirmed CBD’s benefits for PTSD sufferers further, with one study proving that cannabis (the plant which CBD is derived from) can reduce activity in the amygdala, which is associated with fear responses. Another study found that cannabinoids could also help to stop someone reliving traumatic memories.
